1999 – Now  Director, iPUT (Innovative Process Upgrade Technologies, ex Calsun Projects): Main activities included:

    2013 – Now Business Development Role: Develop beneficiation plant throughput step increase technology, initially in coal and progressively through iron ore and a range of other minerals, and lead engineering in implementation phases; Develop clean coal technology applications and implementation models.

   2007 – Now Various Consulting Roles: PNG OK Tedi: Developed strategic plan to get $US250M crusher relocation project back on schedule; Rio Tinto Coal: Developed integrated productivity step change strategy for Hunter Valley mines; Intermetallic Diamond Drilling Solutions: Chief Technology Officer / advisory Board Member;  Glencore Coal: Developed novel throughput step increase concept for Coal Prep Plants; Qld Nickel: Innovative radial stacker design; Coburn Mineral Sands: Unique dozer trap design; Downer QCC: Mech lead for Rio Tinto $352M Mt Pleasant mine coal handling bid; RailCorp: Senior site engineer for $30M OSCar 1 & 2 retrofit program and $320M OSCar 3 train supply (“best ever” NSW govt project); LCR Group: Invincible Mine redevelopment proposals; Downer Engineering: Design review materials handling $70M BHP Mt Arthur North Mine redevelopment; Bulga Mine ROM hopper project; CCG Consortium: Review / develop coal chain efficiency improvement proposals; Somersby Quarry: Expert witness re equipment status / repairs; Ulan West Mine: Radial stacker concept development; P&H MinePro: Tender preparation / support ~$20M across various projects; Narrabri Coal Mine: Innovative $14M train loader proposal development; CMHSFT: $0.8M property development mgr;

Achievements: – Completely repositioned Rio bid from “check price” to “compelling alternative” via novel approach.

– OSCar 3 “best ever” NSW govt project, played a pivotal role to make the relationship “work”.

– Greatly enhanced Mt Arthur North redevelopment with reduced cost and improved functionality.

    2006 – 2007 Idemitsu Boggabri Mine: Project mgr for Calsun’s new $6M design construct coal crushing and automated 125t B-Double truck loadout system and established Idemitsu $/t service contract. World class facility.

    2006 – 2007 Downer EDI Mining: Design mgr for $50M surface infrastructure in $100M Newpac Mine project. This project heading for disaster was turned around to become the most successful “legacy project”.

     2005 – 2007 AlRahabi Group, Yemen: Mineral sand steelmaking project feasibility & plant configuration.

    2003 – 2005 Brambles Industrial Services: Tender preparation for $38M of projects around Australia. Appointed project mgr for a $27M ore storage facility in Whyalla but project not won.

     2004 – 2005 Hunter Enviro-Mining: Project mgt contract to establish new Hebburn mine washery.

    2004 – 2004 Roche / QCC Resources: PWCS Carrington Coal Loader rail receival alternatives development to proposed $60M upgrade.

    2001 – 2004 United Goninan (Broadmeadow, Newcastle): Advice and implementation of eng’g project mgt techniques to initially assist in the winning of a $150M NSW SRA passenger electric DC rail vehicle contract, set up the eng’g for the project, and provided an ongoing support project mgt role. Also managed interior design completion of a high speed diesel multiple unit passenger vehicle for WAGR (Prospector).

    2002 – 2002 Brambles Industrial Services (Port Kembla): Project Manager for $1M design construct coal blending project completed 2 weeks ahead of a tight 16 week schedule. This project, undertaken by Calsun, was a NSW finalist in the 2003 Australian Institute of Project Management Achievement Awards.

    2000 – 2001 Fox Materials Handling (Rathmines, Newcastle): Projects Division Operations Manager for all projects and associated tenders with 4 project/manager reports. Senior Project Manager for critical projects. Projects included a complex $4M 1.4km Central Qld curved conveyor, a $30M ship loader in Mexico, a $2M drift conveyor and stackout in the Hunter Valley, and a full $2.5Mpa underground mine conveyor maintenance management and reliability growth service contract in the Bowen Basin.

    1999 – 2000 Capral Aluminium (Kurri Kurri, Newcastle): Project managed all potline improvement and mobile equipment capital projects, typically $5Mpa across 20-30 projects. Included all phases from feasibility to final commissioning and acceptance.

1995 – 1999 Unity Engineering & Mining Group (Newcastle): Project Manager for most major projects undertaken by Unity: typically $6M+ pa across many design-construct projects in materials handling & processing including reclaim and stacker systems, truck & rail loading/receival systems, conveyors & take-ups, bins & hoppers, ROM receival & crushing, washery upgrades (screens, centrifuges, cyclones, pumps, 27m thickener, sumps & building structure), co-disposal systems, highwall mining development, maintenance shutdowns etc. Typically Hunter Valley projects, but travelled extensively in Qld Bowen basin for a major project at BHP Saraji and for sales / consulting activities at other mine sites.

1993 – 1995 United Goninan (Broadmeadow, Newcastle): Project Engineer responsible for all aspects of the management of a 60,000 man hour engineering design to build forty new locomotives for a $110M Queensland Rail contract. This project set world benchmarks for noise attenuation, reliability and maintainability. Spent 6 months in Townsville during the build phase to get the first loco delivered on time.

1992 – 1993 Insulco (Rooty Hill, Sydney): Project managed and undertook the design, manufacture and commissioning of a $M14 fiberising process plant on a greenfield site in Malaysia, under budget and four weeks early. Identified and managed many projects to improve the operational and environmental performance, reliability and availability of the Sydney plant.

1977 – 1991 BHP Pt Kembla Steelworks: Shift / Section foreman roles & 1 year as Contracts Officer during eng’g traineeship. Then roles of Snr Investigation Eng’r, Crane Eng’r, Snr Mech Eng’r Hot Mills Depts, and Snr Mech Eng’r Slab Plate & Strip Depts. During this period personally managed maintenance work forces of up to 28, a specialist inspection team of 23 and a professional eng’g team of 9. Ran R&M projects to $12M, R&D projects to $0.5M, capital projects to $1M, and deeply involved in BHP’s $300M pa capital redevelopment program in the late 1980’s, travelling to the USA and Saudi Arabia also.
